This Privacy Policy explains how the Messages app ("Messages", "the app", "we", "us") handles information when you use it to send, receive, and organize your text messages. We built Messages to keep your conversations on your device and under your control.
1. Summary
- Your messages, contacts, and conversation content are read on your device to display and organize them for you.
- Smart features (message categories, OTP detection, quick replies, and action detection) run on your device.
- We share information only with the service providers and in the limited situations described below.
- You remain in control: you can back up, restore, and delete your data at any time.
2. Information the app processes
- Message content & metadata. As your device's messaging app, Messages reads SMS and MMS messages and their details (sender/recipient, timestamps, delivery status, and attachments such as images) so it can show and manage your conversations.
- Contacts. With your permission, Messages reads your contacts to display names and photos next to phone numbers and to help you start new conversations.
- Phone & SIM information. On dual-SIM devices, the app reads SIM/subscription details to label conversations and send from the correct line.
- Device & technical information. Basic device information may be processed to operate the app reliably and, where advertising is enabled, by our advertising partner as described in Section 6.
3. How the app uses information
- To display your inbox and conversations and to send and receive SMS/MMS.
- To automatically sort messages into categories such as Personal, Money, OTP, and Spam.
- To detect one-time passcodes so you can copy them quickly, and to suggest quick replies and actions (call, open link, view on map).
- To provide features you choose, such as scheduling a message for later, muting, blocking, archiving, searching, and backing up or restoring messages.
4. On-device processing & the smart-features module
Messages performs its smart features on your device. When you keep smart features enabled, the app may download a small on-device language module from Google's ML Kit in the background so it can recognize items like phone numbers, links, and addresses within your messages. This recognition happens locally on your device. You can turn smart features off at any time in the app's settings, and the app will continue to work for sending and receiving messages.
5. Permissions
Messages requests only the permissions it needs to function as a messaging app:
- SMS & MMS — to read, send, and receive your text and multimedia messages.
- Contacts — to show names and photos and to help you pick recipients.
- Phone / SIM — to support dual-SIM sending and correct line labeling.
- Notifications — to alert you about new messages and enable quick actions.
- Storage / media access — to attach and display images in MMS and to export or import your backup file.
Becoming your default SMS app grants the messaging-related permissions required by that role. You can change the default app or individual permissions in your device settings at any time.
6. Advertising
Messages includes Google AdMob so that advertising can be supported within the app. Where advertising is active, AdMob may process device and usage information, including an advertising identifier, to deliver and measure ads. In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, the app presents a consent choice using Google's User Messaging Platform before personalized ads are served, and your choice is respected. 7. Service providers & how information is shared
We share information only as needed to run the app:
- Your mobile carrier transmits the SMS/MMS messages you send and receive, under your carrier's terms.
- Google provides the ML Kit on-device module, AdMob advertising, and Google Play services used for app ratings and updates. Google's handling of information is governed by its Privacy Policy.
- Backups you create are written to the file location you choose on your device; the destination and any further sharing of that file are under your control.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and security of users and the public.
8. Data retention & your controls
- Message and contact data is accessed from your device's storage; the app keeps app-specific preferences (such as your category and mute settings) on your device.
- You can delete individual messages or entire conversations within the app.
- You can export a backup and restore it whenever you like.
- Uninstalling the app removes the app and its on-device preferences from your device.
9. Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information handled by the app. Please also protect your device with a screen lock, keep your operating system up to date, and store any exported backup files securely.
10. Children
Messages is intended for a general audience. If you believe a child has provided information through the app, please contact us using the details below so we can address it appropriately.
11. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, or request deletion of personal information, and to manage consent for personalized advertising. You can exercise device-level controls (permissions, advertising identifier, default-app selection) at any time, and you may contact us with any request using the details below.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice within the app or on this page.
